Mecsek Guesthouse

Are you looking for a place where mornings begin with the scent of the forest and evenings end with a glass of local wine beneath a clear starry sky? Then come and stay at Mecsek Vendégház.

A Place to Unwind

Our holiday home has been designed as a true retreat and is located in the countryside of Mecseknádasd, nestled among the foothills of the Mecsek mountains.

Nature On Your Doorstep

A hike through the vast natural landscape here doesn’t begin with a car ride — the 50,000-hectare nature reserve is quite literally our front and back garden. The area forms part of UNESCO’s Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve, also known as the “Amazon of Europe”, stretching across five countries and covering nearly one million hectares. It is a paradise for hikers and those seeking peace and quiet. Discover untouched forests with deep valleys and babbling streams. Keep an eye out for deer, wild boar, rare birds, and the rich flora and fauna living freely here. Whether you are an avid hiker or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll, the sense of tranquillity is overwhelming.

From our holiday home, you can also walk straight into the rolling vineyards or take a stroll past dozens of historic wine cellars. The gently sloping hills provide a stunning backdrop for an evening walk, before ending the day with a glass of local wine while watching the sun slowly disappear behind the mountains.

30 minutes from Pécs

After all that peace and quiet, are you ready for a bit of excitement? In just 30 minutes by car, you’ll be in the heart of Pécs. This vibrant city is rich in history and Mediterranean charm, with stunning museums, inviting terraces, and a truly unique atmosphere—perfect for an evening out before returning to the serene calm of Mecsekvendégház.

This area is part of the UNESCO Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve, also known as the 'Amazon of Europe', spanning five countries and covering nearly 1 million hectares.

Adventure–Hiking

Less than 15 minutes

Óbánya Valley

Just a stone's throw from Mecsek Vendégház lies the Óbánya Valley, often called the 'Switzerland of Hungary'. The area is characterized by idyllic villages and an almost fairytale-like natural landscape. The valley connects the villages of Óbánya and Kisújbánya. While hiking through the valley, you can not only enjoy the serene tranquility but also witness remarkable natural phenomena such as the Dripping Rock and the Leaning Waterfall. The latter is truly a unique natural wonder: due to tectonic shifts, the limestone layers have tilted, causing water to flow down sloping plateaus. Nature has essentially created an optical illusion here.

From Mecseknádasd, follow the route via Réka Valley towards Óbánya. At the entrance to Óbánya, you'll find a parking area on the left. From there, walk through the village towards the valley. ! Please wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water.

Réka-vár

Perched atop a narrow mountain ridge lie the mysterious, overgrown ruins of a 13th-century castle. According to legend, Saint Margaret of Scotland was born here. Following a trail through the Réka Valley—crossing the stream several times—you'll make your way through dense beech forests to reach the ruins.

The Wine Cellars of Mecseknádasd

Adventure doesn't always have to mean deep wilderness—it can also be a cultural-historical experience. Mecseknádasd is renowned for its unique wine culture. Starting from one of no fewer than five cellar rows, you can hike toward the hills behind the village, where you'll enjoy panoramic views over the vineyards. But beware of the many small winemakers, who are never too shy to polish up their German while sharing a glass of wine—a true 'Hike & Wine' experience: first the sweat, then the sip in an authentic cellar.

Zengő

Zengő is the highest peak of the Mecsek mountain range, with its summit at 682 meters. At the top stands a lookout tower. Also located here are the ruins of a medieval fort; previously, a Roman watchtower stood on this very spot. The summit is easily accessible via hiking trails, including routes from Pécsvárad and Hosszúhetény. On clear days, you'll enjoy breathtaking views stretching up to 100 kilometers.

Sweet Chestnut Forest

In the picturesque village of Zengővárkony lies Europe's largest sweet chestnut forest, spanning 60 hectares. The chestnut trees here are hundreds of years old, some even reaching 600 years. The forest is privately owned; walking is permitted, but collecting sweet chestnuts is strictly prohibited.

Less than 45 minutes

The Gemenc Forest and Baja

The largest contiguous floodplain forest in all of Europe is a protected nature reserve. The area spans 20,000 hectares and is intersected by the Danube River. This unique ecosystem is under strict protection but remains accessible to visitors. Exotic waterbirds, roe deer, wild boar, red deer with world-record antlers, the rare black stork, shady riverbanks, and hidden backwaters await you. This romantic wilderness can also be explored by bike, canoe, on foot, or even via a narrow-gauge forest railway. After visiting the forest, it's well worth stopping by Baja—a fishing town on the Danube known for its rich history, baroque architecture, and vibrant culture.

Less than 60 minutes

The Caves of Abaliget

The caves of Abaliget are characterized by a rich collection of stalagmites and stalactites. The tunnel system, with a total length of 1,764 meters, is also known as the 'Health Cave'. The fresh, mineral-rich air has a particularly positive effect on people with respiratory conditions.

* Everything tidy

A holiday cottage with service

* We are here to help

Hotels have a concierge. And some even have a butler. We don’t go that far, but you’re never on your own with us. If you need help, we’re here for you. You can easily reach us at any time via WhatsApp or phone. We can also come by and speak with you in person.

* Easy to communicate

You can communicate with us in English, German, Hungarian and Dutch. And with the people in the area? Of course everyone speaks Hungarian, but don't forget: we are in Baranya. A lot of people here speak German. And with English you will get by just fine in most places.

* Privacy

You often choose a holiday home because you want to be independent. A place of your own during your holiday. Your own terrace. Breakfast without other hotel guests. That is what we offer. A lovely cottage with plenty of privacy. You decide when you get up. We do not live in the cottage ourselves. We have our own house.

* Peace and quiet

The cottage is located on a dead-end road just outside the village. So no one has any reason to come here. Ultimate peace and complete privacy. Step out the front door and you’re straight into the vineyards. Turn left and you’ll walk into the forest. Nature right at your doorstep.

* Do you have questions?

Just get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help. You can reach us by phone, email, WhatsApp or Facebook.

* Do you have special requests?

Under the motto #daretoask we would say: don't hesitate! Do you have a special request, just ask. Would you like flowers or decorations because your partner has a birthday? Would you like a fruit bowl with a certain type of fruit ready? Would you like the fridge stocked with certain items? Should we have a bottle of champagne ready? Just ask and we will look together at what is possible.

* Accessibility

Our holiday cottage is difficult or not accessible for people who, for example, depend on a walker or wheelchair. The bedroom, the bathroom and the toilet are located on the upper floor.
